1. This is becoming a broken record, but Lake Silverwood remains in this No. 1 spot for the consistency of its trout bite and the relatively light pressure. Silverwood has been stocked by the DFW 16 weeks in a row, and the bite has been good. The lake is also producing a lot of small stripers, and the winter crappie and bluegill bite looks like it is starting. Check with the marina for an update on this bite at (760) 389-2299 or the Silverwood Country store at (760) 389-2423.
2. Big Bear Lake’s trout action is a real sleeper pick. There have been a lot of limits of fish averaging a pound or so and most stringers have had kicker fish from two to six pounds. The best action has been on inflated nightcrawlers or PowerBait fished on short leaders to keep the bait near the bottom where the fish are cruising. Juniper and Windy points have been the best spots. For an update on this action, check with Big Bear Sporting Goods at (909) 866-3222.
3. The winter yellowtail bite for the San Diego-based boats running south to the Colonet region on 1.5-day trips has been excellent. Several boats had full limits of 15 to 25-pound yellowtail for all anglers on board this past weekend, along with a nice batches of rockfish and ling cod. For information on these trips. Check with either H&M Landing at (619) 222-1144, Seaforth Sportfishing at (619) 224-3383, or Point Loma Sportfishing at (619) 223-1627.
