Most of the San Diego fleet is shifting to five- to eight-day trips along the Baja California coast, moving off the giant tuna off the cape for a while. The exception is Excel, which was still on the big-fish grounds this past weekend. It reported 25 yellowfin May 19, and they have five tuna over 200 pounds for the trip, including a 278-pounder. The boats are running shorter trips now, and just proving the incredible mass of yellowtail along the coast. Pacific Voyager out of Seaforth Sportfishing was on a three-day trip with 15 anglers fishing just 60 to 120 miles south of San Diego, and they returned with 95 yellowtail, 161 red snapper, 161 rockfish, 21 lingcod and 12 barracuda.
