MARINA DEL REY – Tyler Brooks reeled in a 12 pound 5 ounce catch to take home the top prize in the 39th annual Marina del Rey Halibut Derby, July 12.
Friends and family of the Marina del Rey Anglers competed for a cash jackpot and a spot on the club’s upcoming 2.5 day tuna trip aboard the Ocean Odyssey. Out of 40 competitors, just two anglers submitted fish to be weighed.
Jeff Compton, a member of Marina del Rey Anglers, grabbed second place with a 4 pound 5 ounce halibut that was released. Compton received a 25 percent weight bonus for the live release.
“It was tough fishing this year,” Compton said. “If the derby had been held a month earlier, I am sure we would have seen many ore fish. The water temperature rose quickly this year, and with most of the bay now over 70 degrees, I think the spring spawn is over and the big fish are no longer actively feeding.”
Following the weigh in, participants were treated to a fish fry by club chef Jerry Napolitano.
“With the Halibut Derby’s goal this year of limiting impact on the Santa Monica Bay’s halibut fishery, I’d call the 2014 derby a resounding success,” club President John Szymura said.
