MARINA DEL REY — Families are invited to bring their children to Fisherman’s Village in Marina del Rey to take part in Kids’ Fishing Day.
The second annual event will be hosted by Marina del Rey Anglers from 9 a.m.-noon June 24 at the Marina del Rey sportfishing dock in Fisherman’s Village. Free parking, free use of fishing rod and reel and free bait area all included for the day.
Last year, children were taught the basics of safe fishing, given rods and reels to fish with, along with bait and use of the dock, complements of Marina del Rey Sportfishing, and were assisted by volunteers from Marina del Rey Anglers and other organizations.
West Marine provided chum buckets, which attracted the fish to the dock. Giggles and joyful shrieks filled the air as fish after fish was hooked, landed, photographed and released. The children caught mackerel, sand bass and calico bass.
“Last year’s event was a blast,” said Josh Gerson, Marina del Rey Anglers’ president. “Hopefully, this year will be even better.
“One of the main goals of this activity is to enlighten parents on what and where our local fishing resources are, and how easy it is to take their children fishing,” Gerson added.
The event will be held at Marina del Rey Sportfishing, located at Fisherman’s Village, 13759 Fiji Way in Marina del Rey.
Two weeks prior to the June 24 Kids’ Fishing Day, anglers can participate in the 37th annual Marina del Rey Halibut Derby. Anglers will vie to catch the largest halibut, June 9-10.
Halibut Derby fishing starts at sunrise (5:30 a.m.) June 9 and the weigh-in is from noon-3 p.m. June 10. Anglers can request an application by mail by writing Marina del Rey Anglers, 4230 Del Rey Ave. #530, Marina del Rey. Anglers can also apply for entry in person June 6-8 at Burton Chace Park, 13650 Mindanao Way. Adult entry fees are $85; children 12 and younger are $45.
Marina del Rey Anglers is a nonprofit fishing and conservation group. It sponsors the annual Marina del Rey Halibut Derby, a two-month summer youth fishing program on Betty-O out of Marina del Rey Sportfishing, white seabass grow-out pens in Marina del Rey and various other critical marine environmental and conservation programs.
