Ronnie Kovach fishing derby, May 3-4


LAKE ELSINORE – The Ronnie Kovach Dream Extreme Fishing Derby will be held on Saturday, May 3-4 at the Lake Elsinore Hotel and Casino.            

Sponsored by the Lake Elsinore Hotel and Casino, the two-day derby is held in tribute to Ronnie Kovach, an avid angler who hosted popular radio and TV shows. He died Sunday, January 5 in his Huntington Beach home .He was 67.            

For 20 years, Kovach answered callers fishing questions every Saturday from 5-7 a.m. First time anglers and experts alike attended Kovach’s seminars and tuned into the television show “Fishing Ventures” Sunday mornings on FoxSports West.             This year marks the derby’s two-year run and the first as being renamed for Kovach.            

Teams will consist of two anglers who will attempt to reel in four fish species — catfish, wiper, bass and croppies.            

Competitors can mix and mingle at a meet and greet scheduled for 3-5 p.m. on Friday, May 2 at the casino. The derby kicks off at 6 a.m. the following morning with weigh-in scheduled between 2:30-4 p.m.            

An awards banquet and raffle will take place at 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 4 at the casino’s pool area.            

More than 200 teams are expected to participate in this year’s event. Registration is $100 per team with a registration cutoff date of Friday, May 2.
