Tim Sheridan of Venice took first place in the 38th annual Marina del Rey Halibut Derby, June 8-9, with this 33.5-pound California halibut, winning a fishing vacation at Alaska’s Sitka Point Lodge. The derby’s organizer, Marina del Rey Anglers, donated seven live fish weighed in during the competition to Hubbs-SeaWorld fish hatchery in Carlsbad, for use in breeding. Currently Marina del Rey Anglers are working with scientists to develop a stock assessment of halibut in the bay, and they are actively raising and releasing white seabass. The fishing club has organized 28 youth fishing trips for this summer and intends to take between 550 and 600 kids on free saltwater trips aboard Betty-O.
