Central Coast, Sept. 29 report

Hot Bites: Santa Margarita Lake has been fair to good for all species with the best action early and late in the day. Bass best on topwater, spinnerbaits, or shad-like cranks in a fair bite, while the crappie are good and showing around stick-ups on the main lake points for anglers fishing tiny jigs tipped with crappie nibbles. Bluegill and redear are good on red worms on most shallow points. The cats are steady on cut mackerel. Very light fishing pressure at Lopez Lake, but the bite has been good for bluegill and redear with the best action on wax worms and meal worms, also quite a few crappie showing. Also fair to good action for bass. Nacimiento has had a fair bass and bluegill bite and a few crappie reports. Lake San Antonio reopened Aug. 5 and will be open weekends-only (Friday through Sunday) through this Sunday. The striper bite has been fair to good with a lot of 10-pound class fish and there is also a decent crappie bite. For information, call the Monterey County Parks at 831-755-4895.
