Eastern Sierra, July 7 report

GENERAL UPDATE: The general trout season is open through Nov. 15. Top Eastern Sierra fishing report web sites are: KensSport.com (Bridgeport region), TheTroutFly.com, and SierraDrifters.com.

TOP NEWS: Fishing has been fair to good throughout the roadside waters in the region, especially in the DFW trout plant areas. DFW trout plants have ramped up since Memorial Day weekend and most roadside waters are getting weekly stocks. Top action has been at Crowley Lake which has continued to produce a lot of limits of rainbows and cutthroats, with cutts to 5 pounds and a lot of 2-pound class fish. The Twin Lakes at Bridgeport have been slow to fair overall, but Bridgeport Reservoir has been fair with some good action early and late in the day on fish to 5 or 6 pounds. The East Walker River’s flows have stayed up at over 250 feet per second, making fishing tough, but some quality fish mostly for nymph fishermen. The Virginia Lakes are good, with Big Virginia producing some nice brookies as well as rainbows. All the lakes in the June Lake loop have been slow to fair with a flurries of good action after the trout plants. Lundy Lake is fair, while the beaver ponds above the lake are starting to produced good numbers of fish. The backcountry is good for day-hike and back-pack anglers. The lakes in the Mammoth Lakes basin are fair at best, but Convict Lake continues fair to good. The Rock Creek drainage is fair at best, but the backcountry is very good for small fish. The Bishop Creek drainage is generally fair to good, and many of the backcountry lakes are opening up and there is good fishing for day-hike and backpacking anglers. Top spots include North Lake and Intake II after DFW plants. Sabrina is full for the first time since 2011 and has been very good over the past week with a lot of limits and 2 to 4-pound trout. South Lake is higher than it has been in four years, but fishing is still tough. Weir Pond has been a top spot for fly anglers fishing dry flies early and late. Mosquitos are a problem throughout the region.
