TOP NEWS: Tioga Pass opened Wednesday this week. Crowds remain light and the fishing has been slow to fair except in areas with DFW trout plants. Major trout plants throughout the region slated for this week (see trout plants). Top action has been at Crowley Lake which has continued to produce a lot of limits of rainbows and cutthroats, with cutts to five pounds and a lot of two-pound class fish. The Twin Lakes at Bridgeport have been fair overall but continues to cranks out a few big fish. Dan Stewart, Bishop, landed and released the best trout reported so far this season when a 17-pound brown came to his net. He was trolling for the bruiser. All the lakes in the June Lake loop have been fair with a flurry of good action after the trout plants. Big Virginia and Little Virginia Lakes are mostly ice-free now and producing a lot of nice rainbows and brookies on nightcrawlers, Mice Tails, and one of the many small trout jigs on the market. The lakes in the Mammoth Lakes basin are fair at best, but Convict Lake continues fair to good. Most other areas are tough. Some fish in the Bishop Creek drainage lakes, the Rock Creek drainage, and Lundy Lake, but not hot action. Rush Creek’s flows have stayed up at over 200 feet per second, making fishing tough, but some quality fish mostly for nymph fishermen. Other big fish reported this week include an 8-7 rainbow landed at Convict Lake by David Keestler, Mammoth Lakes, on a nightcrawler off the south shore. At Silver Lake, Steve Cullity, Chino, had a 5-8 rainbow on cheese PowerBait.
