Giant tuna season has been nothing short of spectacular so far, for the San Diego-based long-range fleet. Most of the boats have been coming home with full holds of yellowfin tuna from 120 to 200 pounds, and most trips have a number of tuna in the 200- to 280-pound range — and a few fish over 300 pounds have already come in this season. The seven-day boats that were fishing the Cedros Island region in last week found a pick on yellowtail on the back side of the full moon, but also good rockfish, bass and halibut action. After a short break, most of the long-range boats resumed their trips to the giant tuna grounds after the new year began.
