The San Diego half- and three-quarter-day fleet has been fishing Mexican waters for rockfish — and if the bite is any indication, the Southern California opener should be excellent. On Feb. 26, Premier out of H&M Landing was out with 16 anglers on a half-day trip and they landed 70 bocaccio, 52 rockfish, five whitefish and four sculpin. Malihini, also out of H&M, was out Feb. 26 on a three-quarter-day trip with 18 anglers, and they had 129 rockfish, 47 red snapper and four lingcod. San Diego out of Seaforth Sportfishing was out Feb. 24 with 33 anglers, and they landed 268 rockfish, 60 red snapper and two lingcod. The 1.5-day trips have been even better, with limits of rockfish the rule, along with a very good pick on reds and lings.
