SILVERWOOD: The trout action remains fair and the most recent DFW plant was this past Friday. There were also plants two and four weeks ago. The best action has been in around the marina and up into Cleghorn and Miller canyons on inflated nightcrawlers and PowerBait, with some on small jigs. The striper are showing in fair numbers at the dam, the inlet, and up the main channel on swimbaits or trolled flies, while quite a few smaller fish are showing on sardines off the dock. Most of the fish are one to three pounds, but an occasional bigger fish. Most of the other bites slowed down with only the odd catfish showing on chicken liver, sardines, and nightcrawlers in deeper water. Charles Anderson, Yucca Valley, landed a five-pound catfish on mackerel off the dock. Largemouth bass are very slow with only a few on plastics or jigs in deeper water. Anglers should be aware of health warnings for the consumption of fish from this lake because of high PCB and mercury levels in the fish flesh and skin. Here’s the direct link to a PDF brochure explaining consumption recommendations. Dock fishing is allowed for $3 for adults, $2 for kids and seniors. Private boats must be inspected for zebra and quagga mussels. Boats with wet lower units will be turned away. Boats inspected and tagged at Diamond Valley and Perris will be allowed at Silverwood. The park is open seven days a week. Information: marina 760-389-2299, state park 760-389-2281, Silverwood Country store 760-389-2423.
BIG BEAR LAKE: Light fishing pressure but fair trout action for shore anglers. The best action has been on PowerBait or inflated nightcrawlers fished on two to four-foot leaders near the dam and at the Juniper Point. Most are in the 1-8 to two-pound class, and some bigger. Devin Ragsdale, Big Bear, had a pair of three pound rainbows this past week. For updated fishing information: Big Bear Sporting Goods at 909-866-3222 or visit the store’s Facebook page.
