San Diego Area Lakes, Aug. 25 report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Still no news on when San Vicente Reservoir is expected to reopen. There is apparently an issue with the docks that is keeping the lake from opening. At Dixon Lake, the last catfish plant of the season (1,000 pounds) went in last Friday (Aug. 19). Jennings received 1,000 pounds of cats last week and its final plant of the season — 2,000 pounds — will go in next week. There will be a Kid’s Fishing Derby Sept. 24. It is open to kid up to 15 and trout will be planted prior to the event.

FISHING UPDATE: In most of the lakes in this region, the bass and bluegill bites have been the best bet, with the lakes planted with catfish reporting good action on the cats. Top bets for bass include Barrett, Wohlford, Lower Otay, Jennings, and El Capitan. There is generally pretty fair topwater action early in the day and then the fish move deeper and show on live shiners (where legal), nightcrawlers, or plastics. For bluegill and/or redear, Poway, Dixon, Jennings, and Lower Otay have fair to good bluegill bites, mostly on smaller fish right now, with red worms, crickets, meal worms, and nightcrawler pieces the best baits. There has been a good carp bite at Lake Morena for anglers fishing dough baits. At Cuyamaca, trout fishing is very spotty.

FISH COUNTS: At Barrett Lake, 25 anglers checked had 768 bass. At El Capitan, there was no report. At Hodges, there were 122 anglers checked and they had 85 bass and nine channel catfish. At Mirimar, the 54 anglers checked had 31 bass to 4.3 pounds and three bluegill to a pound. At Murray, 32 anglers checked had 35 bluegill. At Lower Otay, there were 155 anglers checked and they landed 270 bass to 3.89 pounds, 350 bluegill to 1.25 pounds, and two redear. At Sutherland, no report was filed.

NOTEABLE CATCHES: At Murray, Michael Stanton, San Diego, had four bass to five pounds on shiners off Cowels Point. At Jennings, Joe Malcuit and Sheldon Myers, both Lakeside, had four catfish to 8-1 on mackerel in Half Moon Bay.
