NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Dixon’s 38th Annual Trout Derby this past weekend drew more than 1,100 participants during the three days of the event. The next biggest fish and the adult-category winner was a 13.89-pound rainbow landed by Seaton Stroud, Big Bear City. FISHING UPDATE: Trout action is beginning to sizzle all over the county. Top bets this week are Dixon, Poway, Cuyamaca, and Wohlford. The bass action has been fair at most waters. San Vicente remains probably the best bet for bass with most of the fish showing in deep water on shiners, plastics, and jigs. There has been a lot of bait up shallow and the bass are crashing the bait in one to six feet of water, and swimbait anglers are cashing in. The panfish bites are really slowing down, but a few bluegill are still showing at Jennings and Murray and a few crappie from Lower Otay. Jennings and Murray have also continued to have a fair catfish bites. Jennings is best on cut baits or nightcrawlers in Half Moon and Sentry coves, while Murray is best in the afternoons off the fishing pier. Unless the numbers are wrong, there is also a heck of a crappie bite at Lower Otay with over 600 fish caught this past week. You believe it?
FISH COUNTS: At Miramar, there were 15 anglers checked this past week and they landed 38 bass to four pounds and one 11.3-pound channel catfish. At Lower Otay, there were 104 anglers checked and they landed 275 bass to 4-7, 602 crappie and 75 bluegill. At Murray, 33 anglers checked reported eight crappie.
NOTEABLE CATCHES: At Murray, Mike Holloway, San Diego, landed a 9-8 bass on a swimbait. At Wohlford, Justin Kennedy, Valley Center, caught and released an 8-6 bass off the south shore rock pile on a plastic worm. worm. At Miramar, Jonathan Taylor, Chula Vista, landed an 11.30-pound channel catfish while fishing for trout with PowerBait.
