NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Lake Wohlford was slated to get 3,000 pounds of rainbows Wednesday this week. These fish join the 1,500 pounds stocked two weeks ago, the 1,500 pounds three weeks ago and the 6,000 pound that went in four weeks ago. Dixon Lake is slated to get 1,500 pounds of trout this week, and it was planted with 6,000 pounds of three weeks ago along with 1,500 pounds two weeks ago. Lake Jennings received 1,500 pounds of trout this week and will also get a similar-sized plant next week. There were an additional 4,500 pounds planted during December. Poway will be getting 1,500 pounds of trout next week. It was also planted with 1,500 pounds last week, including trophy fish, and there were two other plants in December totaling 4,500 pounds. Lake Cuyamaca will get a 1,200-pound plant of Jess Ranch rainbows next week, and it received DFW trout last week. Morena will receive private plants of trout Jan. 23, Feb. 20, and March 6. The DFW planted Chollas Park Lake, Cuyamaca Lake, Lindo Lake and Morena Reservoir last week. Lake Murray and Lindo Lake were planted two weeks ago.
FISHING UPDATE: Trout action is fair to good all over the county. Top bets this week are Wohlford, Dixon, Jennings, Cuyamaca and Poway. The best action is always within the first few days after a plant, although enough fish have gone into most lakes that there is a pretty good holdover population in all of them. The bass action has been fair at most waters. San Vicente remains probably the best bet for bass with most of the fish showing in deep water on shiners, plastics, and jigs, but the cool weather has continued to slow all the bite. El Capitan is also about as good. The panfish bites are really slowing down, but some quality bluegill continue to come from Murray on red worms off the fishing pier, and San Vicente is still producing some nice slab crappie on live shiners.
FISH COUNTS: None available.
NOTEABLE CATCHES: At Murray, Ron Hunter of San Diego landed a 10-3 bass on a swimbait in Padre Bay, while Devon Brown of Los Angeles landed three big bluegill on red worms off the fishing pier, including one at 2-1. At Morena, Spencer Sabin of El Cajon landed a 6-8 rainbow trout on PowerBait.
