San Diego Area Lakes, June 23 report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Still no news on when San Vicente Reservoir is expected to reopen. It was supposed to open this spring, but spring has come and gone. Cuyamaca is getting its final Jess Ranch trout plant Tuesday this week. Catfish plants went in last Friday (June 17) in Wohlford with another plant set for July 1. Wohlford will have its annual Catfish Derby July 6 from 6 a.m. to midnight. Lake Poway’s first catfish plant of the season will be July 1 and night fishing on Friday and Saturday nights will begin that weekend. Jennings’ will get a trout plant this week. most recent plant was two weeks ago. No information on Dixon fishing or plants.

FISHING UPDATE: In most of the lakes in this region, the bass bite has been the best bet. Top bets for bass include Barrett, Wohlford, Lower Otay, Jennings, and El Capitan. But Barrett remains a top pick. Most waters are also seeing much better bluegill and redear action. Poway and Murray have a particularly good bluegill bites on small fish right now. Even waters not getting catfish plants yet have been fair on catfish. Cuyamaca easily has the best trout action in the county with its final plant of the season this week. There has been a good carp bite at Lake Morena for anglers fishing dough baits.

FISH COUNTS: This past week, there were 106 anglers at Barrett and they reported 1,410 bass. At Hodges, 78 anglers reported 121 bass, 14 carp, 13 catfish, six crappie, and four bluegill. At Miramar, 34 anglers reported 84 bass to 4.2 pounds and 12 bluegill to a pound. At Murray, 74 anglers reported 25 bass to 6.85 pounds. At Sutherland, there were 32 anglers who reported 51 bass to 3 pounds, 11 crappie, nine bluegill, and one carp.

TOP CATCHES: Karen Leland, Newport Beach, had 15 bluegill fishing red worms at Lake Murray, and while most were small, the big one was a 1 3/4-pounder.
