San Diego Area Lakes, June 9 report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Still no news on when San Vicente Reservoir is expected to reopen. It was supposed to open this spring, but spring is almost past. All the construction and infrastructure work is done, and the lake is full. It appears the wait is on the City of San Diego to simply open the gates. Cuyamaca is still getting trout plants twice a month through June with an 1,100-pound plant of Mt. Lassen rainbows this coming week and then a final Jess Ranch plant June 21. DFW trout could go in longer. Cuyamaca easily has the best trout action in the county. At Dixon and Wohlford, catfish plants begin in July. Jennings started its catfish stocking season two weeks ago and another plant is scheduled for this week.

In most of the lakes in this region, the bass bite has been the best bet, with more and more bluegill and redear showing as the waters warm up. Even waters not getting catfish plants yet have been fair on catfish.

Top bets for bass include Wohlford, Lower Otay, Murray, and El Capitan. But Barrett, even after a lull during the full moon, remains a top pick. This past week, there were 69 anglers at Barrett and they reported 293 bass and 100 bluegill. There has been a good carp bite at Lake Morena for anglers fishing dough baits.

Top fish: At Cuyamaca, Joshua Levesque, San Diego, landed a 17-8 cat. Mike Eggars, Ramona, caught his limit of trout, including a six-pound Lightning Trout, also at Cuyamaca. At Poway, Yosio Perez, Oceanside, landed an 8-pound bass.

Top bass: A 10-pound bass was landed a Lake Murray on a bluegill swim bait by Steven Feiga, Ridgecrest, off the fishing pier. At Wohlford, Dana Rogers, Valley Center, caught and released a 9.9-pound largemouth on a plastic worm, and there was a 9.1-pounder reported caught at Murray.
