San Diego Area Lakes, May 19 report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: Frustratingly, still no news on when San Vicente Reservoir is expected to reopen. The word is that it will happen later this spring or early summer. All the construction and infrastructure work is done, and the lake is full. It appears the wait is on the City of San Diego to simply open the gates. Cuyamaca is still getting trout plants twice a month with fish planted last week and a double plant slated for next week (private and DFW rainbows). It probably has the best trout action in the county. At Dixon, no trout plants in a month, and catfish plants begin in July. Wohlford will also have catfish plants beginning in July. Jennings will start its catfish stocking season May 27, with its first plant that week. No DFW trout plants this week. With trout plants winding down, most of the action has been for bass with a few catfish and bluegill starting to show.

The bass bite remains strong across the region. Top bets include Wohlford, Lower Otay, and El Capitan. But Barrett is the top spot. This past week, there were 259 at Barrett and they reported 4,425 bass, 371 bluegill, and even 10 crappie. That’s better than 17 fish per angler.
There has been a good carp bite at Lake Morena for anglers fishing dough baits.
Top bass: At Wohlford, Ray Zepeda, Escondido, landed a 9-8 bass on a jig off the Senior Shoreline, and Roy Hammond, Escondido, caught and released a 5-15 largemouth on a Rapala. At Morena, anonymous reports of bass at 14 and nine pound bass. At Lake Murray, Bob Jennino, Spring Valley, and Bob Jenson, La Mesa, each reported bass at six pounds.

Top trout: At Wohlford, Charles Van Pelt, Vista, landed an 8-3 rainbow on a nightcrawler in Boat Dock Cove. Herb Cruz, San Marcos, landed a 7-4 rainbow, also at Wohlford, even though it has been four weeks since a plant.
