Lake Cuyamaca received Jess Ranch trout this week. Lake Dixon received its first plant last Wednesday, a 4,500-pound plant of Nebraska Tailwalkers, and 1,500 pounds went in Tuesday this week. Dixon will be closed to fishing Nov. 30 and Dec. 1 after that week’s plant in preparation for the 38th Annual Dixon Lake Trout Derby Dec. 2-4. Poway will also begin its trout season Dec. 1 with a 3,000-pound plant of Nebraska Tailwalkers. There will also be 1,500 pound plants Dec. 14 and 28, with trophies in the plant on the 28th. Wohlford’s first plant will be a 6,000-pound stock on Dec. 10.
FISHING UPDATE: Trout action is beginning to sizzle all over the county with trout plants finally starting. Top bets this week are Dixon, Jennings, and Cuyamaca, in about that order. The bass action has been fair at most waters. San Vicente remains probably the best bet for bass with most of the fish showing from 10 to 35 feet of water on shiners, plastics, and jigs. Panfish bites are also still fair with some flurries of very good action, but they are starting to slow as nights and waters cool. The panfish bites are really slowing down, but a few bluegill are still showing at Jennings and Murray and a few crappie from Lower Otay. Jennings and Murray have continued to have a fair catfish bites. Jennings is best on cut baits or nightcrawlers in Half Moon and Sentry coves, while Murray is best in the afternoons off the fishing pier.
FISH COUNTS: At El Capitan, 54 anglers checked reported 132 bass. At Miramar, 16 anglers reported 45 bass to 4.1 pounds and six bluegill to a pound. At Murray, 27 anglers reported just two bass. At Lower Otay, 90 anglers reported 251 bass to 3.5 pounds, 20 crappie, and eight bluegill. Counts not available for other lakes. Hodges, Barrett, and Sutherland are closed for the season.
