Even with 20 to 25 knot sustained winds much of the past week, the 1.5- and two-day boats out of San Diego continue to see very good yellowtail on the floating kelp to the south, along with some smatterings of bluefin tuna. Even under very adverse conditions, most anglers have been getting two to three fish per rod — and this bite was really improving this week. The winds calmed down, with some five-fish Mexican limits of yellowtail and a few bluefin. On June 27, Pacific Queen out of Fisherman’s Landing reported in with 40 yellowtail, a bluefin and one opah — and the anglers were still fishing. The yellows have all been 16- to 20-pound-class fish.
