Western Sierra, May 17 Report

LAKE ISABELLA: The trout bite has been very good with a lot of bigger quality fish showing from two to five pounds. The best action has been for trollers dragging Needlefish or bait fisherman work the auxiliary dam and North Fork Arm of the lake. The crappie bite has slowed a little again with the wind and cooler weather early this week pushing the fish back away from the shoreline and out into 20 to 25 feet of water. The bite is still fair to good with Piney Point and Rocky Point the hotspots. The best action has been on small jigs or live minnows fished in this deeper water. The best colors on the jigs have been red and white or red and chartreuse, but other colors are also getting fish. Adding Crappie Nibbles to the jig helps the bite. The catfish bite also has been good, especially on shad and clams in the South Fork Arm of the lake. Still fair to good bluegill action, and a few bass are showing, but not many reports. For carp anglers, this bite is pretty much wide open with the fish flooding the shallows and showing best on dough baits. Lots of carp to eight pounds.
