LAKE ISABELLA: The winds died down by mid-week, but they were coming back up again. The trout action was has stayed pretty fair since the derby three weeks ago. The best bite has been on inflated nightcrawlers, PowerBait, and small jigs, with the cemetery area the best bet. There are also a few crappie showing, especially in the South Fork on live minnows, but darn little pressure on them this week. A few catfish are starting to show, but this bite is just fair with meal worms, minnows, and shad the best baits. Also a few bass showing on plastics around structure with the fish in less than 15 feet of water. The lake level is around 49 percent of full pool. The Kern River flow was up to 4,650 cfs Wednesday at Kernville. The outflow was around 4,700 cfs. KERN RIVER: Trout were planted in all six sections of the Kern last week and four weeks ago. The bite has been slow to fair with high flows both above and below the lake. The lower Kern is still nearly unfishable through the canyon with Isabella release flows at 4,700 cfs. The upper river flows are up to 4,650 cfs at Kernville. A few bass are being caught right in Bakersfield where the river is running through town. Tough fishing conditions everywhere. AQUEDUCT NEAR TAFT: The striper bite is excellent for both numbers and size. Many anglers continue to report 25 to 100 fish days, but most are below the 18-inch minimum size, but getting a couple of keepers is pretty easy. The bite has been sardines, blood and lug worms, anchovies, Flukes, and Gitzits, but the hardbait bite is off. Also more catfish reported in the past week on both mackerel and sardines. No largemouth reports. Anglers are reminded the limit on stripers is two fish greater than 18 inches, while the largemouth limit is five fish. MILL CREEK PARK AND CANAL: A few catfish reported on nightcrawlers.
RIVER WALK PARK LAKE: Quite a few bass are showing with most in shallow for the spawn. The bluegill bite also came on pretty strong with the warm weather this week, mostly on wax worms. Trout slow. Information: Bob’s Bait at 661-833-8657.
HART PARK LAKE: The largemouth bass bite has been fair to good on plastics or nightcrawlers. The bluegill bite is also surging with the warm weather. Best bite on meal worms, wax worms, and crickets. A few more carp are showing in a fair bite on Powder Bait. Other species slow.
TRUXTUN LAKE: The bass are mostly in the shallows for the spawn, but that is winding down. Fair to good action. The best bite has been on nightcrawlers, plastics, or live minnows. A few carp and bluegill being caught in a fair bite, with the bluegill best on wax worms. Few other reports.
MING LAKE: The bass bite has been fair to good. Plastics, Senkos, and live minnows have been the best baits. The bluegill bite is also finally starting to take off on wax worms and meal worms. A few crappie reported and the carp bite is fair.
BRITE LAKE: No recent DFW trout plants. The bite has been slow this past week. Light fishing pressure.
BUENA VISTA LAKES: The largemouth bass bite is the best bet here with fair action on nightcrawlers, plastics, and Senkos. A few crappie on small minnows. Bluegill also starting to show in better numbers now. Wax worms the best bet. Fishing information: Bob’s Bait 661-833-8657 or bobsbaitbucket.com.
WOOLLOMES LAKE: No reports.
SUCCESS LAKE: The bass bite is fair to good with a lot of fish still on beds, but the spawn is wrapping up. Best bite has been in four to 12 feet of water with plastics and reaction baits.
