The yellowtail bite broke wide-open May 23 at the Los Coronados islands for the three-quarter day boats out of San Diego. The bite had been building for the past two weeks, with skippers reporting from five to 20 fish per boat over the weekend. But on Wednesday, the bite really took off. Pacific Voyager out of Seaforth Sportfishing was out with 16 anglers who had 80 yellowtail. The San Diego, also out of Seaforth, had 39 anglers who caught 112 yellowtail. The Malihini out of H&M Landing reported 72 yellowtail and the Mission Bell out of Point Loma reported in with 20-plus fish early in the day. The fish have all been on fly-lined sardines and yo-yo iron this past week and there were even some surface iron fish Wednesday. The best news is that all these fish were from 15 to 25-pounds or more.
