Fish Report -Freshwater, April 16 ed

HESPERIA LAKE: Trout fishing was fair to good this past week after the last plant of the season last Thursday. Catfish season kicks off this week with a Thursday plant. Night fishing starts this week, too, with fishing allowed until 10 p.m. Top trout reported this past week included a pair of 9 pounders, one caught by Russell Newman, Upalnd, and the other by Brent Mueller, Los Angeles. Scott Hardell, Palmdale, and Rudy Hernandez, Fontana, each had 8-8 rainbows. PowerBait, small trout jigs, and garlic nightcrawlers have been the best trout baits baits. JESS RANCH LAKES: Trout action was very good this past week in both lakes this week. The best bite has been on PowerBait (especially spring green, garlic and salmon peach), jigs, and nightcrawlers. Salvador Garcia, Hesperia, had a five-fish limit that included trout at 7-8, 6-2 and 6 pounds. Bass are moving into the spawn with fish to 5 pounds reported. MOJAVE NARROWS: The annual trout derby this past Saturday drew 255 entrants with 104 weighed in. The winner was Adam Paulsen, Beaumont, with a 9-pound rainbow from Horseshoe Lake. Ronnie Jaime, Placentia, was second with an 8-3, while Christian Sanchez, Yucaipa, was third with a 6-15 rainbow. Umberto Romero, Hesperia, had a 4-10 for fourth, while Victor Smith, Apple Valley, had a four-pounder for fifth place. Joshua Lovejoy, Visalia, landed a 3-10 for sixth. There are weekly plants of trout by the county on Thursday through April 23, and the DFW added trout this week and last week. The trout bite has been fair to good on PowerBait, nightcrawlers, and Mice Tails. There will be a kid’s derby April 18. For lake information: (760)245-2226.
