HESPERIA LAKE: Trout plants are weekly and the action has been very good, with a lot of quality fish from 3 to 5 pounds and an occasional bigger fish. Most anglers are getting nice stringers of fish averaging from 1.5 to 3 pounds. Tuesday’s plant this week was 1,800 pounds. Top fish reported was a 20-pound rainbow caught by Sam Newton, San Bernardino, on Power Bait. Marcus Alcanter, San Bernardino, had a 19-8, while Dennis Olson, Hesperia, caught an 18-8. Curtis Reeves, Hesperia, landed a 12-pounder. Quite a few sturgeon continue to show from the 2,000-pound plant in February. Don Merrill, El Monte, landed a 37-pound sturgeon on a PowerWorm, while Mitch Guiller, San Juan Bautista, caught a 36-pounder on anchovies. Mark Smith, Apple Valley, landed a 33-pound sturgeon on PowerBait, while Priscilla Gomez, San Bernardino, caught a 32-pound sturgeon on a trout worm. The catfish bite is slow. Lake hours are 6 a.m.-5 p.m. with the night session from 1-10 p.m. Cost is $15 per angler. No state fishing license is required here. Information: (800) 521-6332 or (760) 244-5951.

JESS RANCH: Trout action was pretty good, but the fishing pressure almost nil this past weekend because of the rain. Best bite has been on PowerBait in salmon egg, rainbow, salmon peach and garlic, with nightcrawlers in garlic, and the usual array of small trout jigs and plastics also getting a few fish. Hot spots included the eastern and western shores of Lake 3 as well as the northern and southwestern shore of Lake 2. Catfish up to 6 pounds were caught on shrimp and mackerel from the western and eastern shore of Lake 2. The lake complex is open every Friday through Sunday from 7 a.m.-4 p.m., and it is stocked with trout each week on Friday from its own hatchery.
