Los Angeles Area Lakes, June 6

CACHUMA: The trout bite has been fair to good for anglers trolling Needlefish or Countdown Rapalas or drifting nightcrawlers at the dam. Some limits reported and most of the fish are in the two-pound class. The bass action is fair to good on reaction baits for both the smallmouth and largemouth. Also some fish on plastics and jigs in 12 to 25 feet of water. The catfish have moved shallow in the channel cuts and backs of coves. Most on cut baits. Crappie are slow with only a few showing off the Cistern Island with mini jigs topped with a meal worm or Crappie Nibble. Carp are excellent for bowfishermen, especially in the east end, Johnson and Cachuma bays in the mornings. Carp bowfishing permits are available at the entrance gate. Private boats must be inspected for quagga mussels and face a 10-day dry dock requirement before being allowed to launch. The marina is open with rental boats available. The boat launch remains open, but boats must get a quagga mussel inspection. Information: 805-688-4040.

he bass bite has been good for anglers dipping live shad and fishing the candy bait early or late in the day. Even without shad, topwater, jerk baits, and cranks have been getting the bass. Redear and bluegill are fair with some better fish in the pound class or better showing on nightcrawlers. No other species reported. Private boats must be inspected for quagga mussels and face a 35-day dry dock requirement before being allowed to launch. Information: 805-649-2043.

CASTAIC: Water level is dropping about a foot per day. Stripers are good with the best bait action on lug worms, sardines, and blood worms in 30 to 40 feet of water in the Ski Arm, off Kong Island, the dam buoy line, and Necktie Canyon. Many anglers are fishing nightcrawlers and lug worms on the same line. Most of the fish are around two pounds, but most stringers have one or two better fish. Casey Sabol, Castiac, had 10 stripers totaling 28 pounds, including an eight-pounder, all on lug worms off the SS Ski. Alex Bois, Valencia, landed eight stripers for 28 pounds, also on lug worms at the dam, and his best was seven pounds. Matt Halpern, Los Angeles, had eight stripers to five pounds on lug worms at the SS Ski. The largemouth bite has also been good in 10 to 25 feet of water around much of the lake, mostly on swimbaits and jerkbaits. The catfish bite is starting to improve. PIRU: The largemouth bass bite has been good on plastics and reaction baits with most fish in six to 20 feet of water. The average fish is from one to two pounds. A few catfish reports, and a few crappie anglers have landed fish to two pounds on small jigs. The bluegill action is pretty good if you can find a school of fish. PYRAMID: The striper bite remains very good with tons of small fish from 10 to 12 inches, a few to three pounds, but darn few bigger stripers. The best bait action has been on nightcrawlers, cut baits (sardines), lug worms, and bloodworms, and trollers are also getting a lot of fish. Good catfish action in the main channel by the gate house and in most of the deeper coves and bays. The best catfish bite has been on nightcrawlers, blood worms, lug worms, and cut baits. The largemouth bass bite has improved, and the best bite is on plastics and nightcrawlers. Most are one to two pounds with a few bigger fish, and the bulk of the fish are shallow now. PUDDINGSTONE: Overall, there has been pretty good bass action on plastics and topwater baits early and late in the day. Tough mid-day.
