SALTON SEA: The tilapia fishing has been up and down again over the past week, but there was a pretty good bite on Saturday and Sunday. That action has slowed again at mid-week with the weather change again and light fishing pressure when stronger winds came back up. Top action has continued to be at the state park jetty and the nearby Salton Sea Yacht Club jetty. Most tilapia are still half- to three-quarter pounders with no bigger fish for over a week. Anglers can fish in the state park headquarters harbor, but the harbor and outlet are still being dredged one day each week. The bite remains almost exclusively on nightcrawler pieces. Flies are terrible and anglers need to bring plenty of bug spray. The park entrance fee is $5 with self-registration. The water has dropped so much that launching was nearly impossible except for small boats (boaters should check with the main office at the recreation area before bringing a boat). The camp store is open Friday through Sunday. Volunteers are needed to work in the visitor center. They get free camping and hookups. Information: Camp Store at (760) 289-9455 (open Friday-Sunday).
