SALTON SEA: It has been up to 122 degrees here this week, and the fishing pressure dropped to nothing since the weekend. The few anglers braving the heat early in the morning on Saturday and Sunday managed to get a few tilapia to 10 inches, but the bite is still not good and the size of the fish has been on the smaller end. The bigger fish are still showing in deeper water (five feet or more), but none of the 1.5- to 2-pound fish have been reported this week. The bite is still all on nightcrawler pieces, and the main jetty at the state park is the only place with any pressure. Anglers can call the state park to get the latest information. The water level is still so low that launching is nearly impossible except for small boats (boaters should check with the main office at the recreation area before bringing a boat). The camp store is open Friday through Sunday. Information: Camp Store at 760-289-9455 (open Friday-Sunday). Salton Sea State Recreation Area main office at 760-393-3059, or the ranger station kiosk at 760-393-3052 (or mobile phone at 760-331-9944).
