SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES: The catfish bite has really started to take off here thanks to recent plants, and the trout bite has been fair. Santiago Palacios, West Covina, landed 24 catfish totaling 90 pounds using shrimp near the Bubble Hole, while Ray Lekowiz, Long Beach, caught a 15 pound catfish using mackerel fishing at the Boat Dock. Top rainbow was a 12-8 landed by Frank Chavez, South Gate, on chartreuse garlic PowerBait fishing in Chris’ Pond. The lake complex is closed every Thursday (the day of the weekly plants) to give the fish a chance to acclimate and spread around the lake. Information: (714) 632-7851.
IRVINE LAKE: Good trout bass action this week. Nebraska Tailwalkers were planted last week and that perked up the action. Top fish reported was a 10-7 landed by Diji Garcia, Orange, on a Thomas Buoyant at mid-lake. Jeff Ford, La Habra, had a 10-pound rainbows, while Frank Carrillo, Santa Ana, landed a 9-10 brown trout. Rob Primm, Artesia, landed an 8-13 rainbow, and Steve Duncan, Lake Elsinore, had an 8-4. Eddy Tillett, Orange, caught a 8-2 rainbow. The bass are showing on plastics and reaction baits in very good numbers. The best fish was an 8-1 caught and released by Kevin Jaimeson, Anaheim, on a Creature Bait. Catfish and bluegill are also pretty decent for anglers targeting these species. Information: (714) 649-9111.
LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE: Warming water temperatures have pushed the trout to deeper water at the dam and the bubble holes. Best bite has been early and late in the day, especially for shore anglers, while float tubers are getting fish on the flats. The last trout plant of the season went in March 25. ANAHEIM LAKE: Closed. The facility will remain closed until Santa Ana River Lakes closes for routine maintenance. Information: (714) 996-3508.
