Orange County, Feb. 18 report

SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES: Potentially holding stocked trout bigger than the rainbow trout state record, this lake continues to crank out some large fish in a good trout bite. Best fish reported this past week was a 19-12 rainbow caught by Tony Lopez, East Los Angeles, on rainbow PowerBait. Patrick Sullivan, Tustin, had a 14-8, while Mathew Boron, Granada Hills, landed a 13-pounder. Trout at 12-8 were caught by bob Barr, Tustin, and Phoevy Ngon, Riverside. Information: 714-632-7851.

IRVINE LAKE: Lake only open Wednesday through Sunday each week with the last day for fishing tentative Feb. 28. A 70-pound class sturgeon was caught and released by Rick Karlovich, Orange, on a plastic crawdad. The bass bite has been fair to good and improving with a lot of fish moving shallow and showing on plastics. No limit on trout or catfish. All boating, including use of rental boats, has been suspended here as of Sept. 5. Information: 714-649-9111.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE: A 1,500-pound trout plant was scheduled for this week. Other plants are slated for the following weeks: Feb. 29 (1,800 pounds), March 14 (1,000 pounds), and March 28 (1,000 pounds). There are no fishing fees this season, only the $5 parking fee on weekends (or $3 during the week). For more information, 949-923-2240.
