SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES: Good action during the night fishing sessions and early and late in the day. Most of the fish are running around two pounds, but bigger fish are reported each week. Top catfish this past week was a 9-8 that topped off a five-fish 27-pound stringer landed by Daniel Chavez, Norwalk. Terry Diamond, Anaheim, had 15 cats for 30 pounds, while Edgar Sandez, Corona, had nine cats for 27-10. The fish are showing on a wide variety of cut baits and the marshmallow-meal worm combo soaked with Eagle Claw Gravy in garlic. The lake is stocked with catfish every Friday. IRVINE LAKE: The catfish bite has really taken off with the warm weather and there was a bonus stocking of broodstock fish to 15 pounds this past week. Top catfish reported was a 35-1 blue landed by Octavio Vergara, Orange, on mackerel from Sierra Cove. Alejandro Rodriguez, Compton, had an 18-7 blue, while Eric Hagan, Orange, landed a 17-pound blue. All blue cats over 15 pounds must be released and the angler is rewarded with a free fishing pass. Fish over 40 pounds also receive a free boat and motor rental pass. Lorenzo Martin, Santa Ana, caught and released a 13-1 channel cat with a $100 tag called “the general.” Other big cats included a 10-7 channel landed by Isaac Espinoza, Orange, and a 10-3 caught by Travis Bradley, Irvine. The catfish bite has been best on mackerel and shrimp baits fished in about 10 feet of water. Santiago Flats and Boat Dock Cove have been the best spots with the late afternoon bite the best. The largemouth bass bite has continued good on surface baits (frogs and rats) or plastics. James Getty, Silverado, had a 5-1 largemouth on a rat off Rocky Point. LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE: The bluegill bite is fair to good all around the lake on small fish. Bass are fair to good on plastics and reaction baits. Information: 949-362-9227.
