SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES: Good action for catfish and tilapia. The catfish are planted weekly and the tilapia go in in alternating weeks. Santiago Palacios, West Covina, had 10 tilapia and 10 catfish totaling 40 pounds on fly-lined nightcrawlers in Chris’ Pond. Nash Helm, La Mirada, had 30 catfish for 55 pounds total. Ty Sanders, Elsinore, landed an eight-pound cat, while Robert Saldana Sr. and Robert Jr., both West Covina, landed seven cats for 14-8 total. The catfish have been best on a wide variety of cut baits and the marshmallow-meal worm combo soaked with Eagle Claw Gravy in garlic. Information: 714-632-7851.
IRVINE LAKE: The catfish bite has been very good. The catfish bite has been best on mackerel and shrimp baits fished in about 10 feet of water. Santiago Flats and Boat Dock Cove have been the best spots with the late afternoon bite the best. The largemouth bass bite has continued good on surface baits (frogs and rats) or plastics. Also a few trout still being caught in deeper water mid-lake and at the dam. A few bluegill and carp are also being caught. Information: 714-649-9111.
LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE: The bluegill bite is fair to good all around the lake on small fish. Bass are fair to good on plastics and reaction baits. Information: 949-362-9227.
