SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES: Bluezilla was caught and released by Robert Fuller Jr., Los Angeles, on Friday this past week. He battled the fish for 25 minutes after hooking the 78-pound bruiser on shrimp off La Palma Point. He won a float tube for releasing the fish. The catfish bite has been very good on 1 to 2-pound cats and there have been a number of huge cats landed. Larry and Tyler Isaias, both Fullerton, landed and released a 25-pound cat from Chris Pond fly-lining shrimp. Mat Hel, La Mirada, had 15 cats for a total of 22-8 on shrimp and mackerel at the Pump House. The fish are showing on a wide variety of cut baits and the marshmallow-meal worm combo soaked with Eagle Claw Gravy in garlic. The lake is stocked with catfish every Friday and there is overnight fishing Friday and Saturday. Information: 714-632-7851.

IRVINE LAKE: The bass bite is the best bet here, but the catfish action has been improving rapidly the past few warm days. (Catfish season will kick off June 5 with a 10,000-pound plant just before.) Also a few trout still being caught in deeper water mid-lake and at the dam. The bass have been best off Rocky Point and at the red clay cliffs, but they are showing all around the lake on plastics and reaction baits. Most are two to three pounds, but Kelli McManus, San Pedro, had a 4-5 on a Senko from Boat Dock Cove. The cats are showing in less than 10 feet of water and some bigger fish are being landed. The best this week was a 24-4 channel cat landed by Sergio Fainzstein, Costa Mesa, off Rocky Point on Bite-On catfish bait. Don Spencer, Orange, had a 22-pound blue cat, also on Bite-On off Rocky Point. Top trout reported was an eight-pound rainbow landed by Adam Berry, Lomita, on a Flickershad at mid-lake, while Mark Kaniewski, Rowland Heights, caught a 7-7 on a Kastmaster off the west shore. A few bluegill and carp are also being caught. Information: 714-649-9111.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE: The bluegill bite is excellent all around the lake on small fish, and some nice crappie are showing. Bass are fair to good on plastics and reaction baits. Trout are very tough with only a few showing in deep water on the flats or at the inlet. Information: 949-362-9227.
