SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES: Catfish plants are now weekly on Thursday, replacing the trout plant. The catfish bite is already good with some nice stringers showing. Santiago Palacios, West Covina, had 17 catfish totaling 42-11 on mackerel or the marshmallow-meal worm combo. Luis Guzman, Bellflower, had six catfish for 15, while Ruben Carranta, Santa Ana, had five cats that went 13 pounds. The lake complex is closed every Thursday (the day of the weekly plants) to give the fish a chance to acclimate and spread around the lake. Information: (714) 632-7851.
IRVINE LAKE: Trout season is winding down, but a few fish are still showing for bait anglers or trollers fishing in 15 to 25 feet of water. Ron Nowat, Trabuco Canyon, had a 6-12 rainbow on a Mice Tail in Boat Dock Cove. Bass are the best bet with a good bite on two to four-pound fish showing on plastics and reaction baits around much of the lake. Mark Netlas, Los Angeles, landed a nine-pound bass on a swimbait off Crawdad Point, while Bill Campbell, Orange, had an 8-5 on a plastic. Fair to good bluegill action, and quite a few cats are starting to show. Kent Smith, Long Beach, landed a two-pound bluegill fishing for bass with a Senko. Information: (714) 649-9111.
LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE: Slow trout action with only a few fish showing at the inlet. The bluegill bite is excellent all around the lake on small fish, and some nice crappie are showing. Bass are fair to good on plastics and reaction baits. Information: (949) 362-9227.
ANAHEIM LAKE: Closed. The facility will remain closed until Santa Ana River Lakes closes for routine maintenance. Information: (714)996-3508.
