SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES: Overall good catfish action with a few quality fish showing. Erasmo Salas, Compton, had the week’s best catfish at 18 pounds caught on mackerel in the Catfish Lake and then released. Tuan Mai, Corona, had a 10-fish stringer that weighed 41-13 fishing from a tube with mackerel. Julio Urrutia, Placentia, landed 10 cats for 28-3. IRVINE LAKE: Good catfish action continues and Aman Hayes, Los Angeles, caught a 22-6 catfish fishing with Ronson Smothers. The best action has been at mid-lake and Santiago Flats, with productive depths ranging from three to 30 feet with mackerel, shrimp, and bonito. Terry Lairson, Huntington Beach, had channel cats at 9-9 and 9-2, while Daniel LeBouf, Villa Park, had a 12-pound blue cat. Bass anglers found good numbers of two to four-pound largemouth on dropshot-rigged baits near Rocky Point and the Red Clay Cliffs, with a few larger fish on swimbaits and Creature baits. Top bass was a 10-7 largemouth caught by Justin Emerson, Orange County, on a plastic crawdad. Plenty of plump bluegill and redear sunfish were caught on mealworms and waxw orms in shallow brushy areas. Trout season will kick off Thursday, Oct. 30, with a special VIP fishing day, followed by the general opener the next day.
