SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES: Good catfish action and a parade of quality fish were reported after the big plant of trophy fish last week. Top fish was a 22-8 landed by James Anderson, Duarte, on mackerel by the boat dock in the big lake. Jason Cho, Anaheim, had a 14-8, while Eli and Samuel Touache, Panorma City, had eight cats totaling 25-8, including one at 8-8. Bill Wright, Anaheim, caught 15 catfish totaling 35-8. The lakes are being planted twice a week with both catfish and tilapia. The first qualifying tournament for the 2014 Slay Fest Championship will be 5 p.m. Saturday, June 21. IRVINE LAKE: The catfish bite has been good in the evenings and after dark on fly-lined mackerel chunks with a lot of two and three-pound fish. Santiago Flats, along the west shore, and the rock pile have been the top spots. Top catfish reported was a 15-1 channel landed by Joey Arballo, El Modena, on mackerel off the flats. The trout bite remains good for trollers or anglers drifting bait in 15 to 30 feet of water near the dam. Quite a few holdover fish to four pounds reported. Jason Mullen, Orange, had a 3-5 steelhead on a nightcrawler at the dam. Bass anglers did well on all of the usual techniques, with evening hours better than daytime hours on mostly two to four-pound largemouth. White Curry, Anaheim, landed a 4-8 bass on a Nezumma Rat off the west shore. Information: 714-649-9111.
