SILVERWOOD: Trout fishing slowed down since the big plant two weeks ago with the fish scattering, but another DFW plant is set for this week. The fish are showing around the marina and into both Cleghorn and Miller canyons. Small spinners, jigs, and PowerBait best bets. The striper bite has been good, especially on lug worms drifted at the dam, in Miller Canyon, and fished around the marina. Marcus Hamilton, Pomona, had seven stripers to 6 pounds fishing lug worms in Miller Canyon. Most are two to three-pounders, and sardines and blood worms are also good baits. The largemouth bass are fair to good with most fish moving shallow for the spawn. Swinbaits and plastics the best bets. Don Rogers, West Covina, had a three-pound largemouth on a wacky-ricked worm off the marina docks. Catfish fair, with a few on cut baits off the dock. Anglers should be aware of health warnings for the consumption of fish from this lake because of high PCB and mercury levels in the fish flesh and skin. Here’s the direct link to a PDF brochure explaining consumption recommendations: oehha.ca.gov/fish/so_cal/pdf_zip/081013KioskadvySilverwood.pdf. Dock fishing is allowed for $3 for adults, $2 for kids and seniors. Private boats must be inspected for zebra and quagga mussels. Boats with wet lower units will be turned away. Boats inspected and tagged at Diamond Valley and Perris will be allowed at Silverwood. The park is open seven days a week. BIG BEAR LAKE: The trout trolling is good with limits of nice fish to three pounds common on Needlefish in Trout Alley between Gilner Point, the Rock Wall, and the Zebra Room. Further west the bite is good from the buoy line to Gray’s Landing. Shore anglers are getting limits along the north shore from the dam and at the old Gray’s Landing area. Most of the rainbows are showing on PowerBait in yellow or green with garlic. A few bass starting to show, but other species are very slow.
