Fish Report-Freshwater, Dec. 17 ed

SILVERWOOD: Trout action has been fair to good for anglers fishing the shallow coves and points in Cleghorn and Miller canyons or around the marina, and DFW fish are slated to go in this week. Inflated nightcrawlers doused with garlic scent, PowerBait, or MiceTails all good bets. Also some fish on small spinners and spoons. Other species have slowed down, but there was a surprising largemouth bite this past week on the points and drop-offs all around the lake. Drop-shot plastics have been the best bet. Arnold Fields, Santa Ana, had three bass to 2-8 fishing around the marina docks with plastics. The stripers and catfish are still showing in low numbers for anglers fishing cut baits off the marina docks, in the main channel, and around the dam. Luke Dupras, Adelanto, had five catfish topped by an 8pounder fishing chicken liver off the marina docks. Hector Sosa, San Bernardino, had a striper and a catfish at four pounds, also on chicken liver off the dock. Anglers should be aware of health warnings for the consumption of fish from this lake because of high PCB and mercury levels in the fish flesh and skin. Dock fishing is allowed for $3 for adults, $2 for kids and seniors. Private boats must be inspected for zebra and quagga mussels. Boats with wet lower units will be turned away. Boats inspected and tagged at Diamond Valley and Perris will be allowed at Silverwood. The park is open seven days a week. BIG BEAR LAKE: The winter trout bite is in full swing with fair to good action morning until 10 a.m. along the north shore with the trout usually not more than 20 or 60 feet off the bank in six to 10 feet of water. Garlic and salmon egg-flavored PowerBait in red, chartreuse and rainbow colors have been the best bet fished on three to four-foot leaders to keep the bait out of the bottom vegetation. Lots of fat pan-sized fish showing and some to two pounds or better. Limits not uncommon for anglers braving the chill. All the boat ramps are now closed. JENKS LAKE REGION: No recent plants at Jenks Lake, Santa Ana River, and the South Fork of the Santa Ana River. The Jenks Lake parking area is closed for the season, but anglers may walk into the lake from other parking along the Jenks Lake road.
