Fish Report-Freshwater, Dec. 3

SILVERWOOD: Cold, windy weather has slowed the bite with mostly slow action this past week. There continue to be a few stripers and catfish showing at the dam and around the marina docks, but the bluegill, crappie, and largemouth bites have all been tough. A few trout continue to show, but the most recent plant was two weeks ago. Joshua Decker, Fontana, had three rainbows on mini jigs in Cleghorn and his best fish was a two-pounder. The catfish and stripers are mostly in deep water and showing on chicken liver or nightcrawlers. Juan Lopez, Hesperia, had nine stripers on chicken liver fished off the marina rocks and his best was a three pounder. Matthew Bernal, Costa Mesa, had two catfish to six pounds on chicken liver fishing off the docks. Anglers should be aware of health warnings for the consumption of fish from this lake because of high PCB and mercury levels in the fish flesh and skin.  Dock fishing is allowed for $3 for adults, $2 for kids and seniors. Private boats must be inspected for zebra and quagga mussels. Boats with wet lower units will be turned away. Boats inspected and tagged at Diamond Valley and Perris will be allowed at Silverwood. The park is open seven days a week. Information: marina 760-389-2299, state park 760-389-2281, Silverwood Country store 760-389-2423.

BIG BEAR LAKE: Trout action best in the mornings from 6 to 10 a.m., and they are tight to shore in six to 14 feet of water. The best bite is early along the north shore (Red House region) on garlic or salmon egg-flavored PowerBait in red, chartreuse, and rainbow colors fished on three or four-foot leaders. The dam area boulders have also been producing fish on fly-line nightcrawlers or PowerBait on a slip bobber. All the boat ramps are now closed.
