San Bernadino Mt. Waters, March 10 report

SILVERWOOD: The striper bite has picked up in recent days since the rainy, windy weekend. The stripers are showing at the dam, the main channel, and marina docks at the mouth of Cleghorn and Miller canyons. The best action is on sardines, blood worms or chicken liver. Most of the fish remain small, under two pounds. Marcus Hall, Hesperia, had 10 stripers at the dam on chicken liver, while Angel Gonzalez, Victorville, had a pair of stripers to 3 pounds off the marina dock on sardines. Trout are fair and a DFW plant was slated for this week. The best action has been in Cleghorn and Miller canyons. Adam Smith, Huntington Beach, had four rainbows, including one at five pounds, fishing Roostertails in Miller Canyon. Catfish are showing off the docks and main lake points, still mostly in deeper water, but this bite is tough. Other species slow, but a few largemouths are starting to show with the fish nosing up into shallower water for the spawn. Anglers should be aware of health warnings for the consumption of fish from this lake because of high PCB and mercury levels in the fish flesh and skin. Here’s the direct link to a PDF brochure explaining consumption recommendations: Dock fishing is allowed for $3 for adults, $2 for kids and seniors. Private boats must be inspected for zebra and quagga mussels. Boats with wet lower units will be turned away. Boats inspected and tagged at Diamond Valley and Perris will be allowed at Silverwood. The park is open seven days a week. Information: marina 760-389-2299, state park 760-389-2281, Silverwood Country store 760-389-2423.
