San Bernadino Mt. Waters, March 17 report

SILVERWOOD: The striper bite has remained fair with some flurries of good action. The best bite has been at the dam, the main channel, and marina docks on cut baits and jigging spoons or ice jigs fished on or near the bottom. John Morres, Riverside, had nine stripers to 2 pounds on sardines and vertical jigs fishing the main channel and marina docks. The largemouth bass are starting to show in better numbers with some fish moving up shallower. Most still in 12 to 30 feet of water and running from one to three pounds. Plastics and nightcrawlers good bets. Tristan Penny, Lake Arrowhead, had three bass to 3-12. Trout are fair and a DFW plant went in last week. The best action has been in Cleghorn and Miller canyons. Catfish improved dramatically this past week with the best big in Cleghorn or at the dam on cut baits. Anglers should be aware of health warnings for the consumption of fish from this lake because of high PCB and mercury levels in the fish flesh and skin. Here’s the direct link to a PDF brochure explaining consumption recommendations: Dock fishing is allowed for $3 for adults, $2 for kids and seniors. Private boats must be inspected for zebra and quagga mussels. Boats with wet lower units will be turned away. Boats inspected and tagged at Diamond Valley and Perris will be allowed at Silverwood. The park is open seven days a week. Information: marina 760-389-2299, state park 760-389-2281, Silverwood Country store 760-389-2423.
