SILVERWOOD: The warm weather has been slowing improving the striper and catfish bites. The stripers are showing at the dam, the main channel, and marina docks at the mouth of Cleghorn and Miller canyons. The best action is on sardines or blood worms. But most of the fish remain small, under two pounds. Mark White, Santa Ana, had six stripers to a pound on sardines in the main channel, while Ted Anderson, Apple Valley, had two stripers to two pounds on sardines off the marina docks. Catfish are showing off the docks and main lake points, still mostly in deeper water. Antonio Gonzalez, Fontana, had a 4-pound catfish on chicken liver. The trout bite has been slow to fair with the most recent DFW trout plant three weeks ago. Cleghorn and upper Miller Canyon are the top spots and most of the trout are in the pound class. Other species slow, but a few largemouths are starting to show. Anglers should be aware of health warnings for the consumption of fish from this lake because of high PCB and mercury levels in the fish flesh and skin. Dock fishing is allowed for $3 for adults, $2 for kids and seniors. Private boats must be inspected for zebra and quagga mussels. Boats with wet lower units will be turned away. Boats inspected and tagged at Diamond Valley and Perris will be allowed at Silverwood. The park is open seven days a week.
