Fish Report-Freshwater, Oct. 28

SILVERWOOD: The striper and catfish action continues pretty good. The stripers have been good at the dam, in the main channel, and off and around the marina docks. Sardines have been the best bait, but lug worms and anchovies are also getting a few fish. Heather and Marco Ayala, Fontana, had 10 stripers averaging about a pound fishing sardines off the dock. The catfish are showing in the mouths of the coves and creek mouths on most cut baits. Dan Henderson, Apple Valley, had a six-pound catfish on sardines fishing off the dock. The largemouth bass, bluegill, and crappie have all been slow. Anglers should be aware of health warnings for the consumption of fish from this lake because of high PCB and mercury levels in the fish flesh and skin. Dock fishing is allowed for $3 for adults, $2 for kids and seniors. Private boats must be inspected for zebra and quagga mussels. Boats with wet lower units will be turned away. Boats inspected and tagged at Diamond Valley and Perris will be allowed at Silverwood. The park is open seven days a week. BIG BEAR LAKE: The trout action has continued to be very good with the cooler weather setting off a good bite. The trout are close to the shorelines with the best bite early in the morning. Top spots have been near the Red House and all along the north shore. Salmon egg-flavored PowerBait in red, chartreuse, and rainbow fished on long leaders (5 feet) have been the best bet for bait anglers fishing from shore or boat. Trollers are also working the north shore or trout alley in six to eight feet of water. Lots of limits and a lot of bigger fish planted for the recent Western Outdoor News tournament are being landed. There is also a pretty good bite on bullheads off the fishing pier, Boulder Bay, and all along the north shore on nightcrawlers. Other species slow. DFW trout plants this week and three weeks ago.
