San Bernardino Mountain Waters, March 29 Report

SILVERWOOD: The Highway 138 road closure finally ended Friday this past week. The DFW stocked the lake twice with trout last week (Tuesday and Friday). This is the second week in a row for double plants, and the lake is on the list again for this week. The trout bite has been very good around the marina, Cleghorn Canyon, and Miller Canyon. PowerBait, Mice Tails, and small jigs have all been good. Joshua Cameron, 6, Victorville, had a 1-8 rainbow on PowerBait. The striper bite has been fair, mostly in deeper water at the dam or off the marina docks on cut baits. Tanner Finn, San Bernardino, had five stripers to six pounds on sardines at the dam. His stringer weighed 14 pounds. A few crappie are showing off the marina docks on small jigs. Jesus Herrera, Hesperia, landed five crappie, and his best was a 2-pounder, all caught on jigs off the dock. The stringer of fish weighed 6 pounds. Largemouth, bluegill slow. A reminder: the dam is now closed to anglers. Anglers should be aware of health advisories for the consumption of fish from this lake because of high PCB and mercury levels in the fish flesh and skin. Here’s the direct link to a PDF brochure explaining consumption recommendations: http://www.oehha.ca.gov/fish/so_cal/pdf_zip/081013KioskadvySilverwood.pdf. Dock fishing is allowed for $3 for adults, $2 for kids and seniors. Private boats must be inspected for zebra and quagga mussels. Boats with wet lower units will be turned away. Boats inspected and tagged at Diamond Valley and Perris will be allowed at Silverwood. The park is open seven days a week. BIG BEAR LAKE: The trout bite has remained fair to good. Nice catches are coming from the north shore as far east as Juniper Point and as far west as the face of the dam when the weather cooperates. Itís still an early morning bite, and near the dam anglers will want to throw jigs, spoons and spinners. Further east — from the Red House to Grayís Landing to Juniper Point — use Carolina rigs fished close to the shoreline with floating dough baits in a variety of colors and flavors or Mice Tails (good colors are fluorescent orange-chartreuse or bubble gum-white). There have been a lot of nice 1-8 to four-pound rainbows over the past week. Jason Lawlor, Big Bear, landed a 4.9-pound rainbow. No reports of other species.
