San Diego Area Lakes, April 14 report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: The biggest news is that San Vicente Reservoir is expected to reopen later this spring after major dam and facility work. More as details are available. Lake Dixon will have its annual Kiwanis Derby April 23-24 with a major trout plant just before the event. The rainbow trout action continues to be fair to good at lakes getting planted with private hatchery fish, but the season is winding down. Jennings got its last weekly plant last week. Cuyamaca has been as good as Jennings and it will get trout alternating weeks through June 21, getting 1,000 pounds of Jess Ranch trout next week. A lot of limits reported at both lakes. Wohlford and Dixon are generally getting 1,500-pound plants alternating weeks, with each receiving a plant last week. Poway received 1,500 pounds of Tailwalkers this week. DFW trout are slated for Chollas Park Lake, Cuyamaca Lake, Lake Jennings, Lake Mirimar, Lake Murray, Lake Wohlford, Lindo Lake, and Morena Reservoir this week.

Other than trout bites, there is a generally good bass bite throughout the region as the fish move up into the shallows for the spawn. Lots of small male bass in the catch. Cool, wet weather shut down the crappie, bluegill, and redear bites.

Top trout this past week: David Corrales, San Diego, caught a new Lake Jennings trout record when he landed a 17-pounder this past Saturday. He also had a 10-8 rainbow the same day. At Lake Wohlford, Aleksander Terzic, Escondido, landed a 9-4 rainbow on green PowerBait from Oakvale Cove.

Top bass this past week: At Lake Morena, Ryan Ashby, Lakeside, landed a 10-6 bass on a nightcrawler from Geezer Cove. At Murray Reservoir, Kyle Kennedy, El Cajon, had a 6-pound bass on a shiner in Del Cerro.

Other species: A 1-8 bluegill was caught by Jen Wright, Tennessee, on red worms off the fishing pier at Murray.
