San Diego Area Lakes, April 7 report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: The biggest news is that San Vicente Reservoir is expected to reopen later this spring after major dam and facility work. More as details are available. Lake Dixon will have its annual Kiwanis Derby April 23-24 with a major trout plant just before the event. The rainbow trout action continues to be fair to good at lakes getting planted with private hatchery fish, but the season is winding down. Jennings remains among the top spots with weekly stocks, but Jennings received its last plant of the season this week — 1,000 pounds of Sierra Bows. Cuyamaca has been as good as Jennings and it will get trout alternating weeks through June 21, getting 1,000 pounds of Jess Ranch trout next week. A lot of limits reported at both lakes. Wohlford and Dixon are generally getting 1,500-pound plants alternating weeks, with each receiving a plant this week. Poway received 1,500 pounds of Tailwalkers last week. No DFW has plants scheduled for this week.

Other than trout bites, there is a generally good bass bite throughout the region as the fish move up into the shallows for the spawn. Lots of small male bass in the catch. The crappie bite at Hodges came back on this past week, but it is getting light pressure. The bluegill and redear are starting to show at Miramar and Murray.

Top trout this past week: There was an 11-6 rainbow caught at Lake Dixon by Alexander Kawasaki, Torrance, on a white PowerWorm from Trout Cove. At Wohlford, Marijan Mutijevic, Escondido, had a 9.55-pound rainbow on green PowerBait in Oakvale Cove. At Cuyamaca, Kevin O’Kesson, Ramona, landed a nine-pound rainbow using a nightcrawler-PowerBait combo.

Top bass this past week: A 5-pound bass was landed by Austin Stallings, Ramona, fishing a Senko at El Capitan Reservoir. It was the best fish of his five-fish catch.

Other species: None reported.
