NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: The rainbow trout action continues to be fair to good (and sometimes excellent) at lakes getting planted with private hatchery fish. Jennings is the top dog in plants with weekly stocks, getting 1,000 pounds of Lightning Trout this week. Limits in 15 minutes have been reported. Wohlford and Dixon are generally getting 1,500-pound plants alternating weeks, with each receiving a plant last week and the week of March 20, however Dixon’s plant is 3,000 pounds last week. Poway received 1,500 pounds of Tailwalkers this week. Cuyamaca is also getting plants every two weeks with 1,100 pounds of Mt. Lassen trout last week. The DFW has plants scheduled for this week at Chollas Park Lake, Cuyamaca Lake, Lake Jennings, Lake Miramar, Lake Murray, Lake Wohlford, Lindo Lake, and Morena Reservoir.
Other than trout bites, there is a generally good bass bite throughout the region as the fish move up into the shallows in a major pre-spawn movement of fish. In fact, fish are already on beds in many places. There is also a fair to good crappie bite at Lake Hodges and a few slabs showing at El Capitan and Lower Otay. The Wohlford Lake bite on crappie has also started to kick into gear.
Top fish this past week: At Cuyamaca, Mike Eggers, San Diego, had a 15-12 rainbow on salmon-peach PowerBait on two-pound test, Robert Meyer, Hemet, had a 10-12 trout on green garlic PowerBait dipped in a krill scent. Earl Callander, Oceanside, and weighed 11.65-pound rainbow at Wohlford on a nightcrawler. At Dixon Lake, Ralf Leonhardt, San Marcos, landed a 10-12 Tailwalker on PowerBait at the buoy line. At Jennings, Tom Cosgrove, El Cajon, landed a 7-10 on a Mice Tail.
Other than trout, Wendell Jackson, Escondido, caught and released an 8-15 bass at Wohlford while fishing for crappie. At Poway, Barbara Hernandez, El Cajon, landed and released (without weighing) an eight-pound or bigger class bass on a white jig with a Fluke tail while fishing Hidden Bay.
