San Diego Area Lakes, March 24 report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: The rainbow trout action continues to be fair to good (and sometimes excellent) at lakes getting planted with private hatchery fish. Jennings is the top dog in plants with weekly stocks, getting 1,000 pounds of Lightning Trout last week on 1,000 pounds of Sierra Bows Tuesday this week. Wohlford and Dixon are generally getting 1,500-pound plants alternating weeks, with each receiving a plant this week. Poway received 1,500 pounds of Tailwalkers this week. Cuyamaca is also getting plants every two weeks with 1,100 pounds of Mt. Lassen trout last week. The DFW has plants scheduled for this week at Chollas Park Lake, Cuyamaca Lake, Lake Jennings, Lake Miramar, Lake Murray, Lake Wohlford, Lindo Lake, and Morena Reservoir.

Other than trout bites, there is a generally good bass bite throughout the region as the fish move up into the shallows in a major pre-spawn movement of fish. In fact, fish are already on beds in many places. Lots of small male bass in the catch. The crappie bites all lulled (or anglers aren’t reporting their catches, which has been known to happen), with only a handful of fish reported at El Capitan this past week.

Top trout this past week: At Poway, Daniel Hernandez, Otay, had a 10-pound Tailwalker on a Power Worm. The fly-fishing midge bite has begun here, and Hamid Seyf, San Diego, had a nine-pound rainbow on a zebra midge while flyfishing. At Cuyamaca, Tom Den, Santee, landed a 9-4 rainbow along with trout at 4-8 and 3-12, all on garlic PowerBait. Raymond Para, Corona, had an eight-even, a 6-4, and a 2-8. At Morena, Brad Voigt, Chula Visa, topped off his limit with an eight-pound rainbow while trolling, while Jim Rice, Campo, also had a limit and his big fish was a 7-6 rainbow, all on PowerBait and nightcrawlers.
