NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: The biggest news is that San Vicente Reservoir is expected to reopen later this spring after major dam and facility work. More as details are available. The rainbow trout action continues to be fair to good at lakes getting planted with private hatchery fish. Jennings remains among the top spots with weekly stocks, getting 1,000 pounds trout last week, this week, and next week. Top spot has been the Hermit Cove buoy line for boat anglers or the old boat ramp for shore anglers. A lot of limits reported. Wohlford and Dixon are generally getting 1,500-pound plants alternating weeks, with each receiving a plants last week and next week. Poway received 1,500 pounds of Tailwalkers Wednesday this week. Cuyamaca is also getting plants every two weeks with 1,100 pounds of Mt. Lassen trout last week, including 500 pounds of trophy fish. No DFW has plants scheduled for this week.
Other than trout bites, there is a generally good bass bite throughout the region as the fish move up into the shallows for the spawn. Lots of small male bass in the catch. The crappie bites are all slow to fair with only a handful of fish reported at Hodges and El Capitan this past week. The bluegill and redear are starting to show at Miramar and Murray.
Top trout this past week: The biggest fish came from Lake Cuyamaca this past week with a 13-pounder landed by Mark McCall, Lakeside, leading the parade. Brandon Sawyer, Descanso, had a 12-8 top off his four-fish stringer that also included six and four pounders. Rod Forrester, San Diego, landed an 11-12 At Poway, Michael Irey, San Diego, landed an 11-4 rainbow on garlic PowerBait combined with a green trout worm at the east end of the log boom. Shawn Armstrong, Poway, had a 10-pound rainbow, while Alex Kopischke, Poway, had a nine-pounder. At Wohlford, Mario Livigni, Escondido, landed a 7-9 trout on chartreuse PowerBait in Oakvale Cove. At Jennings, Rick Jones, Lakeside, topped off his limit with a 5-4 rainbow on garlic PowerBait.
Top bass this past week: At Wohlford, Mike Hernandez, Valley Center, landed a 9-9 on a swimbait off the south shore rock pile. At El Capitan, Randy Robertson, Ramona, caught a 7-pound largemouth.
Other species: Delaney LaMoulie, Fallbrook, had five carp weighing a total of 14-2 fishing bread dough in El Capitan this past weekend. Michelle Downing, San Diego, had eight redear to a half-pound using red worms fishing at Lake Murray’s fishing pier.
