San Diego Area Lakes, March 10 report

NEWS/STOCKING UPDATES: The rainbow trout action continues to be fair to good (and sometimes excellent) at lakes getting planted with private hatchery fish. Jennings is the top dog in plants with weekly stocks, getting 1,000 pounds this week, and there will be a 1,000-pound plant of Lightning Trout next week. Wohlford and Dixon are generally getting 1,500-pound plants alternating weeks, with each receiving a plant this week and the week of March 20, however Dixon’s plant is 3,000 pounds this week. Poway received 3,000 pounds last week, and the next plant will be 1,500 pounds on March 15. Poway is now closed on Mondays and Tuesdays to boating and fishing. Cuyamaca is also getting plants every two weeks with 1,100 pounds of Mt. Lassen trout this week. There are no DFW plants scheduled for this week, but fish will come from the state next week at Chollas Park Lake, Cuyamaca Lake, Lake Jennings, Lake Miramar, Lake Murray, Lake Wohlford, Lindo Lake, and Morena Reservoir.

Other than trout bites, there is a generally good bass bite throughout the region as the fish move up into the shallows in a major pre-spawn movement of fish. In fact, fish are already on beds in many places. There is also a fair to good crappie bite at Lake Hodges and a few slabs showing at El Capitan and Lower Otay. The Wohlford Lake bite on crappie has also started to kick into gear.

Top fish this past week: Poway produced a 13-4 rainbow for Richard Gauntner, Rancho Penasquitos on a green mini jig from Hidden Bay. At Wohlford Lake, there was an 11.65-pound trout landed by Earl Callander, Oceanside, on a nightcrawler off the Senior Shoreline, while Wendell Jackson, Escondido, landed an 8-15 bass while fishing for crappie. At Murray Reservoir, Louie Dardar, Santee, had four redear and his best weighed 2-4, a possible lake record, according to the marina staff.
